Taking Control of Your DiabetesIt is essential for people with diabetes to take care of themselves. Diabetes can lead to serious complications, but steps can be taken lower these risks and control the disease. Eating well-balanced meals and exercising regularly can help you manage your diabetes. Losing ten to fifteen pounds may be beneficial as well. And of course, it is crucial to monitor your blood sugar and take any medications your physician prescribes.

Most of the burden of diabetes control is placed on your shoulders, and this can be overwhelming. It is important to have the knowledge, skills, and support you need to deal with the disease on a day-to-day basis, and we are here to help.

Individual and group diabetes education programs are available for people of all ages to assist them in learning about diabetes self-care for good health. These programs include instruction on blood sugar testing, medications, exercise, and healthy eating along with problem solving to assist with individual lifestyles and needs. For example, suggestions are offered on traveling with insulin and testing supplies as well as advice for varying work schedules, sports or athletics, and special occasions or holidays.

As if this is not enough, the ongoing struggle of coping with diabetes can also lead to many difficult emotions, including mood changes, melancholy, lethargy, depression, and a sense of deep personal loss. Counseling services and support groups are available as well.
