Happy, Healthy Feet By Leslee Ruszkowski, D.P.M.
Here are some tips to help keep your feet happy and healthy:
File your toenails with an emery board instead of cutting them with a sharp instrument. This helps to prevent ingrown toenails. Although not uncommon, foot odor can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. To keep your feet feeling and smelling "fresh", try spraying your feet with under-arm antiperspirant spray. Soaking your feet in water does not make then soft and smooth; in fact, it actually dries out your skin even more. Moisturizing your feet with cream is recommended instead to keep your feet soft. If you like to get pedicures, try not to keep your nail polish on your nails for more than two weeks. The chemical Formalin that is found in tinted polish can cause yellow discoloration of your nails or a white chalky film to form on the nail plate. Nail polish should also never be used to cover or hide thick, discolored nails. This may signify a fungal nail condition that needs medical attention. Many treatment options are available to allow for healthy nails. Wearing support hose, even if they are knee high, are great for controlling mild swelling in the feet. As a bonus, they also help preventing varicose vein formation.
