Ask the Doctor: Overactive Bladder (OAB) With Julia Fiorentino, M.D.
Q. What symptoms may indicate overactive bladder? A. Common symptoms of OAB include the urgent need to void, frequency of urination, increased nighttime urination, and incontinence or leakage.
Q. Isn't frequent urination just a normal sign of aging? A. No. This is a misconception, leading the average patient to suffer longer than one year before seeking treatment!
Q. How is the problem diagnosed? A. The problem is diagnosed by your healthcare provider taking a thorough history and review of symptoms, reviewing your prescription and over-the-counter medications, obtaining a focused physical exam, and having you complete a voiding diary. Lab testing, such as urine sample, blood sugar, and kidney function, is also conducted. Additional studies are reserved for complex or unusual cases.
Q. Can I do anything to manage my bladder problem on my own? A. You can try scheduled voiding, limiting your caffeine and alcohol intake, and consistently practicing Kegel strengthening exercises. However, keep in mind that even nonpharmacologic treatment options require the guidance of a healthcare provider.
Q. What other treatment options are available? A. Other treatment options for OAB include behavioral treatment, biofeedback, and prescription medications. Prescriptions need to be tried for two to four weeks before their effect can be determined. Occasionally, you may be referred to a specialist in urology or urogynecology. There are even newer and less invasive surgical interventions available. Although OAB is a challenge to treat, there are a variety of options, and the first step is bringing the problem to the attention of your healthcare provider. Play an active role in your health care, and remember – knowledge is empowering!
